Another headliner is out of the picture for the Florida tournament. Serena Williams announced her withdrawal on Sunday in the Miami Herald. In the men's draw, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had already withdrawn.

Serena Williams will not be playing in Miami either. She announced it in the press this Sunday, justifying her withdrawal by a recent operation ("oral surgery"). "I'm sad that I won't be able to see the incredible crowd this year, but I hope to be back soon," the American was quoted as saying in the Miami Herald.

No Serena... or Big 3

The Florida tournament, where Serena Williams has won eight times in her career, has already seen some high-profile withdrawals on the men's side, with world number one Novak Djokovic and his Big 3 compatriots Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both withdrawing. The women's tournament, which begins on 23 March, will nevertheless feature a tough field, with the top four in the WTA rankings: Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep and Sofia Kenin.
