I've not had chance to really write a match preview or analysis on what I see to be a crucial match in Federer's prolonged career - not just his US Open chances.

Federer vs Kygrios is a fascinating clash of contrasting styles of the way to play tennis

Having overcome Benoire Paire in straight sets in the previous round Federer now faces the Big Four Nemesis Nick Kyrgios tonight in literally 10 minutes time. Federer is 3-1 against Kyrgios head to head but every match has been mightily close and in each the Aussie has taken a set off Federer. But funnily enough this is their first ever Grand Slam meeting  between the two and if Federer is to win the US Open he must win tonight convincingly show he has the confidence and consistency to overcome such tricky opponent as the big server.

Kyrgios has an unbelievably powerful serve that can see him through many games with little effort, this has proved a thorn in Federer's side. If Kyrgios serves to his full ability tonight Federer will have to be on the ball to ensure he takes the tie breaks they will inevitably face.

Kyrgios is an amazing talent who has always suffered from his lack of mental discipline. But even this Achilles heal has never stopped him from scoring some big wins against the big 4. He is a dangerous adversary who thrives on the big occasions so no matter how up and down his recent results have been he should not be underestimated.

Yes I picked Federer to win the US Open, yes he is still in it, but my outside bet crashed out last night to Raonic in straight sets and this is a big match where outcomes are very hard to predict. Can Nick Kyrgios record the biggest Grand Slam win in his career or will the Swiss Maestro keep setting New York on fire with his hugely clinical forehand?

Take a look at their last meeting in Stuttgart on grass where Federer was fortunate to escape a third set tie break and you will understand the challenge he faces tonight...

I'm calling this a Federer win but it will be tough match and it could go to 5 sets! From a neutral tennis fans point of view I hope it does, it will force Federer out of his shell and into his full steam ahead tennis game his is more than capable of, especially when coming forward at the net!
