Wawrinka to miss "several weeks" after left foot surgery!😭
Stan Wawrinka has announced on social media Thursday that he has undergone surgery on his left foot. The 35-year-old Swiss will be away from the courts for some time. The operation seems to have gone well, but he has not yet given a date for his return to the court. However, he has already withdrawn from the tournaments in Marbella, Monte Carlo and Belgrade. Will we see Stan Wawrinka at Roland Garros this year? At the time of writing, nothing is less certain. He appeared very tired in his last few matches, notably in Doha where he lost the first round, and announced his withdrawal from the Miami event in order to rest and prepare for the clay court season. At least that was the assumption. But on Thursday, on social networks, he revealed that he had undergone surgery on his left foot. He posted a picture of himself smiling in his hospital bed and was rather reassuring about the extent of the damage, but did not say when he would be back in action. "I wanted to give you some news. After having some problems with my left foot for a while, I decided to have a little surgery on it. I'll be away from the courts for a few weeks, but I'm already looking forward to returning to training soon," he said in his message. With barely two months to go before the start of hostilities on the Paris clay court (May 23-June 6), the clock is ticking and the timeframe seems very short for Wawrinka. The player has withdrawn from all the tournaments on his calendar next month: Marbella (5-11 April), Monte Carlo (11-18 April) and Belgrade (19-25 April). This is the second operation the Vaudois has undergone in four years. In the summer of 2017, he already had to go through surgery to patch up his left knee, an injury in all likelihood much more serious at the time than the one for which he is again arrested. At 35, the three-time Grand Slam winner is currently ranked 21st in the world: before this stoppage, he had a difficult start to the season (3 wins and as many losses), weakened by a coronavirus infection last winter.
