"Sumo", a sport that has spread to Japanese people's bone marrow
Speaking of "sumo", then we talk about Japan. Sumo is a national sport, traditional Japanese culture. When I follow the origin and the source, I have to go back to mythological times, because sumo sports have entered the bone marrow of Japanese culture and always live side by side with people's lives there. And here I want to introduce some sumo wrestling history for more than 1500 years which I have summarized from various sources. Let's explore how it feels at that time! Photo from "Sketches of Japanese Manners and Customs", by J. M. W. Silver - source Sumo is a traditional sport that arises from strength and compatibility which is the development of human combat instincts. In some of Japan's neighboring countries such as Mongolia and Korea there are also traditional wrestling sports similar to sumo, this sport has been known by Japanese people since prehistoric times. In 8th century Japanese classical literature, the initial form of sumo was known as Sumai. Sumo in the form that is known today may be different from sumo in ancient times. Japanese rulers in the 16th century named Oda Nobunaga often held sumo tournaments. The shape of the sumo ring as it is known today comes from the era of Oda Nobunaga. Compared to the mawashi of today, which is made of fine, rigid fabric, sumo wrestlers during the time of Oda Nobunaga still wore lower body covers from loose, coarse cloth. In the Edo period, sumo wrestlers competed by wearing a beautiful and handsome mawashi called the mawashi kesho. Sumo has been held every year as a festival which occupies this year's crop harvest. This will be a court event later and will last 300 years. Its origins are old, there are descriptions of games called legends such as Kojiki, Nihon Shoki, Nomi Yuzuki and Tamba Takemitsu. In addition, as part of the sumo meeting as a court event to celebrate the autumn harvest, sumo dedication has been carried out at the temple to pray for a good harvest, this is something directly involved with Japanese culture. image "invitation to the temple of sumo wrestlers in the Noriyuki Gambar ring" in 1866 - source Sumo charm hasn't changed since the Edo period Sumo has many fans such as baseball and contemporary football and is very enthusiastic about the Edo period citizens. It is said that style has changed a little since the Edo era, and you can withstand the situation at that time. Why don't you go out to watch Sumo wrestle to feel the mood of the Edo people there.
