It was speculated when Dean Ambrose returned to help Seth Rollins fight Dolph Zigler and Drew McIntyre that he was going to turn his back on the Shield. When that didn't happen at Summerslam, the idea of the turn started to fade away with him coming to help Roman Reigns along with Rollins in their original combat attire a couple months ago.

Just when the idea was starting to fade, the past two weeks have resurrected the idea when Ambrose looked stuck between the two teams last week when he took a long gaze at the Dogs of War led by Braun Strowman. He came to his senses and joined Reigns and Rollins in the ring for their signature three fist pose.

After last night's RAW, during an in-ring interview, though he stuck with the motto of "The Shield is not a brand, the Shield is a brotherhood," he did mention some things for his behavior that can be the reasoning behind his future heel turn.

Ambrose mentioned that both Reigns and Rollins are both champions, how Rollins replaced him with Jason Jordan while he was out on injury, and the theory of him simply waiting for the perfect time to strike.

Later in the night when Reigns confronted Ambrose about his actions, he mentioned that he could've been the universal champion referring to the choices Baron Corban offered earlier in the show including an intercontinental championship match against Rollins and a one-on-one with Strowman.
