In the announcement post, @chops316 very wisely pointed out how difficult it can be to make your selections with your head instead of your heart. That will be especially challenging for me this year.

This is the first time in my life that the the two teams I have rooted for since I was a kid, the Chargers and the Bears, are legit contenders (although I'm still struggling with that move to L.A.). Not only are they legit, this has been the most fun I have had watching football since the 1981 Chargers and 1985 Bears. But those teams were really only fun on one side of the ball. These bears are a different story.

The fun began the second John Gruden (who is the smartest guy in any room... just ask him) decided to trade away the most devastating pass rusher in the NFL to the Bears. I have never seen a single move impact a team the way that one did (actually it impacted two... the Raiders were made far worse and the Bears far better). For the first time in years, Bears fans watched every single play expecting to be entertained.

Strip sacks are VERY entertaining!

But defense is only part of the story. The Bears also have a Pro Bowl kick returner in Tarik Cohen whose size and speed seem to defy logic (the dude is tiny). Toss in a kicker who has hit the uprights 5 times and now every kick is an adventure that opens up the possibility of a side bet on every kick.

However, the biggest effect on "fun" has been rookie head coach Matt Nagy. Although he has made some rookie mistakes involving field goes, fourth down calls, and time outs, the guy gets it. Football is a game. Games are fun! They happen to be more fun when you are winning but they are supposed to be fun nonetheless.

By now most people who have watched a Bears game have heard the announcers talk about Matt Nagy's "Club Dub". After a win, the Bears turn their locker room into a dance club for a few minutes and act like kids who have just won a game... because that is what they are!

In addition to "Club Dub", Nagy has figure out what many employers have not: your workers perform better when they feel included and valued... and if they are having fun. As a result, Nagy has come up with several offensive packages that involve the use of defensive players and offensive linemen as weapons.

Just 16 games into his tenure, 2 defensive players, Nick Kwiatkoski and Akiem Hicks, have scored touchdowns and offensive lineman Bradley Sowell has caught one. That pass actually came after Trubisky faked a hand off to the 332 pound Hicks. Nagy also ran a short yardage play that involved 10 offensive and defensive lineman and one running back.

The ultimate sign of Nagy "getting it" came on the Bears very first offensive snap back in September. Many people will remember that game as the one where the Bears blew a huge lead to the Packers. But not me. I will remember it as the game where the brand new rookie coach showed his appreciation for the tradition and fans of one of the most important and storied franchises in the history of football.

Nagy's first play call included three running backs lining up in a row perpendicular to and five yards behind the quarterback. In other words, he lined them up in the "T formation". If you do not understand the significance of this, you have never heard the Chicago Bears fight song entitled "Bear Down Chicago Bears".

Luckily for Bears fans, Nagy clearly has.

Hopefully there will be four more of his "Club Dub" celebrations this year.
