Newcastle v Crystal Palace

With games in the Premier League this weekend fairly limited both these sides will see this fixture as a chance to secure top flight action for another season and assuming they can add a couple more wins in the remaining matches both will also be targeting an admirable 12th place finish.

Given the relative lack of free flowing football and goals from both teams this season, this is hardly likely to be an encounter for the ages. However, Newcastle are on a particularly good run of form at home having won all 4 of their last league games at St. James Park, a run that started with a shock victory over current champions Man City. One of my favourite cult footballers Solomon Rondon (great name) has been amongst the goals lately and is forming a very effective partnership with Ayoze Perez, a player whom I think could play at a bigger club. If those 2 continue their recent form and put the home side in front we know they will be difficult to break down.

For their part Crystal Palace who are normally very strong in their South London fortress have been far more effective on their travels this year and so should perhaps not be so easily written off when it comes to Saturday's game despite Newcastle's impressive home record. In fact, Crystal Palace have scored nearly twice as many goals this season away from Selhurst Park and if you sort the PL table by away results only then Palace would find themselves in 7th position! The Zaha / Batshuayi combination has blossomed in recent weeks and if those 2 can fire again as they did recently at Burnley and Leicester then Palace have every chance of pinching a result from this game.

Bournemouth v Burnley

Burnley will be coming into this match buoyed by their 2-0 victory over Wolves last time out, a win that saw them put an end to a 4 game losing streak and stabilise their position 5 points clear of the relegation zone. As such you'd feel that a win at Bournemouth tomorrow would all but seal their place in the Premier League for another season.

However, standing in their way are one of the most prolific scorers at home in the EPL this season as the likes Chelsea can attest to. Eddie Howe sets out his team to attack and play free flowing football so perhaps it's no great surprise to find that they are the leagues highest scorers at home outside of the top 6. On the flip side they also have the division's 5th worst defensive record with only their rivals in Saturday's game, Burnley and the 3 teams that make up the bottom 3 having conceded more goals so far this season.

Bournemouth will be hoping to overcome something of mini slump in form themselves that has seen them drop to 12th in the table. I guess it's always difficult for a side in their position who know they are safe and are really just playing for league position to be 100% up for the fight at this stage of the season. While I'm sure that Eddie Howe will be impressing upon his players the need to finish this season well, Sean Dyche should have no problems motivating his team. A result here would take them into next week's crunch match against Cardiff knowing that a win would seem them home!

Recent form is also very much much with the Clarets who won the reverse fixture 4-0 at Turf Moor and who have won 9 out the previous 20 meetings between the 2 clubs (6 draws & 5 defeats).

Barcelona v Atletico Madrid

This game feels like a clash between an unstoppable force and an immovable object such are the differences in footballing philosophy between the 2 clubs. Free-flowing Barcelona are the league's highest scorers while ultra-organised Atletico have the best defence.

With Barcelona 8 points clear with 8 to play they are very much champions elect. The big question then is how much do they put into this match and how much do they hold back for their Champions League encounter in Manchester on Wednesday? Certainly Barca can't afford to lose this game but presumably they would be happy to escape it unscathed both in terms of injuries and the points difference with their nearest rivals Atletico.

By contrast Atletico have nothing left to play for but the league and assuming that that is beyond them they will at least want to take city bragging rights by finishing ahead of Real this season. While Atletico will be confident that their defence can hold off Barca's attack they will also fancy their chances at the other end with the hosts having conceded 4 times in their last outing.

This is a fixture that often throws up a draw with 4 of the last 7 fixtures having ended all square.
