It’s an all English final in the Champions League and the team that finished first in the Premier League against the team that finished fourth. Of course Chelsea changed managers midway through the season and with a full season in charge Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel would expect to mount a strong title challenge.
Both sides have reached a domestic final this season with Manchester City winning the EFL Cup and Chelsea losing the FA Cup final to Leicester. That could be an advantage to Chelsea who’s players would surely not want to taste defeat in a major final for a second time this month.
Manchester City’s Champions League record this season has been incredible. Of twelve games played they have won eleven and drawn the other. They have scored over two goals per game and only conceded four goals. Chelsea have been strong as well winning eight of twelve and also only conceding four goals.
Both sides have faced some very strong teams on their route to the final. Manchester City faced last seasons finalists and Tuchel’s former club PSG in their Semi Final and won both legs, 1-2 and 2-0. Chelsea played Real Madrid and they drew 1-1 away and won 2-0 at home.
The two teams have played each other twice recently and it’s Chelsea with the advantage there as they have won both games. First they won the FA Cup Semi Final 1-0 and then won 1-2 in the Premier League although Manchester City may argue they did not take those games as seriously as they will be taking this one. The Premier League game for example was when Manchester City had already wrapped up the league and Chelsea still had something to play for.
Manchester City – Form
The Premier League champions have won seven of their last ten games but have lost two of their last five and it has been an odd close to the season for Manchester City with the title being wrapped up for some time. They have not really taken their foot of the peddle though and one of the losses was to Brighton where Man City had Cancelo sent off early.
Their most recent and last game in the Premier League resulted in a 5-0 win for Man City against Everton. That game was Aguero’s last Premier League match and he managed a double in the second half, with Foden, De Bruyne and Jesus scoring the other goals.
Manchester City have averaged 5.4 corners and 2.2 cards per game.
Chelsea – Form
The side from West London have stuttered into the close of the Premier League winning only two of their last five. That’s two losses in the league to Arsenal and Aston Villa and the FA Cup Final to Leicester and they only just managed to finish in the top four thanks to Tottenham’s win against Leicester on the final day of the Premier League.
The Aston Villa loss was Chelsea’s most recent game and they lost that 2-1 thanks to ex player Bertrand Traore who scored one goal and won a penalty for Villa’s second. Chelsea pulled one back through Ben Chilwell but never really looked like winning and have struggled with converting chances recently.
Chelsea have averaged 7.1 corners and 1.4 cards per game.
Key Player: Ex Chelsea man Kevin De Bruyne is always excellent and seems to relish showing Chelsea exactly what they have missed scoring three in his last five matches against them.
Betting Tips: It’s going to be a tense and tight affair. I fully expect a chess match between two very good managers and well drilled sides. I am expecting a lack of goals but plenty of cards and i think we may see penalties again.
