If there was any bout that the whole world has been clamouring and waiting for? it's Joshua-Wilder unification bout, with Joshua-Fury & Joshua-Whyte also popular demands, unfortunately, those blockbuster bouts might forever be just a dream with the shocking defeat of Anthony Joshua by an unfancied Mexican-American, The Brit will now focus on a rematch rather than a bout with Wilder, Fury or even Whyte.
There was a major upset in the Heavyweight division of world boxing when Mexican-American, Andy Ruiz Jnr knocked out the world IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO champion, Anthony Joshua in the 7th round on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden, United State America. AJ as Joshua is fondly called opted to fight Andy Ruiz jnr after the initial challenger, Jarrell Miller of the USA failed a drug test.
The matchup was tagged a mismatch by most pundit as AJ poses the bigger man and of course, the world champion is undefeated at 29, 0, KOs 21. However, Ruiz rules his world too, 1 solitary defeat in his 33 career bout(32, 1, KOs 21), he is no pushover.
ROUND 1 & 2: The early minutes of the 1st round was cagey as AJ circled the ring and kept Ruiz at bay with his longer reach and jabs. Ruiz, on the other hand, though looked nervous at first, but soon got his act together and started probing AJ as the round eased out. An Improved 2nd round for AJ as he landed a couple of shots on Ruiz coupled with a few body shots, but the Mexican landed his own hook too. The round ended with AJ slightly edging on the scorecard.
ROUND 3: The ring was ignited in the 3rd round as the crowd watched on in awe at the Madison Square Garden as AJ landed hook combos that sent Ruiz to the canvass, surprisingly, Ruiz got up on his feet to send the champion to the floor too with his quick combos. AJ beat the count at 8 to his feet, wobbling! as Ruiz fancied his chance and went for the jugular and had AJ back on the floor moments later, AJ regained his feet and was rescued by the bell as the round ended.
ROUND 4 & 5: The 4th round was more of a recovery round for both boxers they caught their breaths from an explosive 3rd round, with AJ the more shaken boxer. A relatively quiet round it was. AJ looked to have fully recovered by now and slightly edged the 5th round with a couple of both left and right hooks but Ruiz seems unrattled.
ROUND 6: This round is all about Ruiz, as he took the ascendances with a swift left hook on AJ, he soon followed up with a combination of body shots. AJ got a counter hook though but Ruiz was unfazed as he pushed AJ backing up on his heels. An entertaining 6 round that set up what was to come in the 7th round.
ROUND 7: The round started in style, AJ sprung an attack on Ruiz with a left hook, shockingly, Ruiz counterattack and sent the champion to the floor at his own corner, for the 3rd time in the bout. The champion scrambled to his feet and staged an attack again, but Ruiz, fully in charge now, sent AJ back to the canvass for the 4th time, and this time, the referee had seen enough and wave the bout over, a TKO victory in favour of Ruiz.
Andy Ruiz jnr had inflicted AJ's 1st knockdown since his heavyweight victory over Wladimir Klitschko and his 1st ever defeat in 30 career bout(29, 1, KOs 21). According to CompuBox, Joshua was outpunched by Ruiz 47 to 56. AJ and his camp immediately signalled to exercise the rematch clause included in the bout contract.
