Despite the suspension of a live match in cricket due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the absence of cricket matches didn’t stop former cricketer Yuvraj Singh from commenting on Indian cricket team’s performance. Singh said in a recent interview that the youngsters of Men In Blue seem to be forgetting to respect the seniors who handle the team.
The former batsman of India cricket team compared the team now and they’re before who showed the senior cricketers with more respect.
He voiced out his opinion using his Instagram account while he was on a call with vice-captain, Rohit Sharma.
‘The difference I find between our team and now is during our time seniors were very disciplined. Social media was not there so no distraction also,’ said Singh.
He made comparisons on how the players of the team are branding themselves on social media. Singh said that his generation was more disciplined and more focused on matches.
According to Yuvraj, who was part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup, he feels that the presence of social media is radically changing the attitude of the junior cricketers toward their seniors.
‘In this team, seniors are you (Rohit) and Virat (Kohli) who play all three formats. I just feel since social media has come, there are fewer guys to look up to. That sense of respect for seniors…it has become a thin line’.
Singh mentioned players like Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul in his comments to Sharma.
‘KL, Hardik incident…we could not think it would happen. It’s not their fault also. IPL contracts are so big, they are not even playing for India and there is so much money.’
The former batsman said that Kohli and Sharma should guide the team more.
‘You need seniors to guide them. Sachin always told me if you perform on the field, everything will follow. I was in (National Cricket Academy) NCA and players don’t want to play Tests. The second generation does not want to play Tests and that is the real test for a cricketer’.
