Cricket boards all around the world are incurring huge losses due to the ongoing pandemic but none greater than BCCI (Board of Cricket Control in India).BCCI is set to incur a loss of mammoth 4000 crores (530 Million USD), if IPL stands suspended.
Every bi-lateral series getting cancelled from now on will add to the losses. BCCI is not going to do any pay cut to the contracted players and stated that safety and health of the cricketers is paramount. This is a good thing considering all other cricket board’s have announced pay cuts to their contracted players.ICC has already planned for the cricketing events for 8 years till 2023 in the Future Tours Program(FTP). Now with COVID-19 scare all boards will be struggling to follow FTP and resume cricketing operations in their respective countries.FTP might undergo big changes when cricketing activities resume.
Cricket Boards are mulling about many changes in the way cricketing events happened earlier. There is a call for more bi-lateral series than the multi team tournaments like World Cup. The reason behind this line of thinking is financial gains will be more in Bi lateral events compared to world events. There are talks around the cricketing fraternity that two teams from same country might be sent for bi-lateral series and both teams might be playing different series in the same country. This also might add to financial gains to current crisis situation.
England Cricket Board has clearly stated that Women’s Cricket will take a back seat till the board is financially stable. BCCI has an alternate line of thinking. Board is ready to give equal opportunities to Men’s Cricket, Women’s Cricket, India-A and Under-19 events.
The Cricket boards of Sri Lanka and UAE have offered to host the 12th edition of IPL in their country. There are examples where IPL has been shifted to other countries. Whole second edition of IPL happened in South Africa due to security concerns prevailing in India during that time. First two weeks of Seventh Edition was organised in UAE due to the Lok Sabha general elections happening in India. BCCI has acknowledged the offer of both countries, but yet to give any response. Considering the current situation,IPL might not be possible in any country this year.
