Gopal Bose, the former Bengal captain, has passed away at the age of 71 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Birmingham on Sunday (August 26). Bose played a solitary ODI for the national side in 1974 against England, which was incidentally just the second game in 50-over cricket for India. He scored 13 runs with the bat and picked up a wicket in that contest.

Bose, an opening batsman in first-class cricket, scored 3757 runs in 78 games with eight centuries and had also picked up 72 wickets. He was also picked up in the Indian squad for the unofficial tour to Sri Lanka following a successful season with the bat. He scored a century in the contest.

Bose served as a selector and a coach post his retirement and was also the manager of the Indian U-19 team when they won the World Cup in 2008 under Virat Kohli. He was conferred with the lifetime achievement award by the Cricket Association of Bengal in 2016.
