As everyone knows New Zealand are a side that would always punch above their weight. And it was on display during the first t20 against India where they handed the visitors their biggest ever defeat in terms of runs.

Rohit Sharma the Indian skipper won the toss and opted to bowl. Surprisingly they went in with 3 wicket-keepers and 3 all-rounders. New Zealand on the other hand brought back Southee in their line-up,

The Indians may not have expected the start New Zealand would get. As both the openers Colin Munro and Tim Seifert took the likings and smashed every Indian bowler. At the end of powerplay they had already put up 66 on the scoreboard without loss of any wicket.

Eventually it was Krunal Pandya who got Munro out in the 8th over. But that didn't stop Seifert at the other end. He continued the onslaught and even got reprieved by Dinesh Karthik. Seifert played some attractive shots throughout his stay for 84 runs before being bowled out by Khaleel Ahmed.

Kane Williamson(34), Ross Taylor(23) and Kuggelejin(20*) all played crucial knocks at the end as they ended up on 219.

India were expected to give a stiff competition to the hosts as pitch was not that difficult to bat on. But that didn't happen. Southee picked up the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma early on as he tried to pull. Shikhar Dhawan looked to be in great touch before being dismissed by Ferguson who dished out a brilliant yorker. Pant and Dinesh Karthik failed to utilize their opportunities as they departed for only 4 and 5 respectively.

Vijay Shankar though played a good albeit short knock of 27 runs. The only positive one could take from Indian batting was Ms Dhoni's knock as the veteran scored 39 of 31. The Indian innings ended at 139 losing by 80 runs.

Tim Southee was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 3 wickets giving away only 17 in 4 overs. Tim Seifert was declared Man of the Match for his knock of 84.

India would hope for a better show during second t20 which will be played on 8th of Feb in Auckland.
