What a hunk! Remco Evenepoel is world champion in the class of juniors after a fantastic race. The race was like a movie. He crossed the line like Philippe Gilbert did in the Tour of Flanders: with his bike in the air.

Did we discovered the new Eddy Merckx ?

Remco Evenepoel started his sports career as a soccer player. He was good and on the age of 16 he became captain of the National Red Devils team U17. He played with PSV Eindhoven and Anderlecht. 2 Topteams in the Nederlands area.

In Anderlecht, he lost his position in the A team because they didn't see any growth in his future. He was that disappointed, he start cycling. When he found out, he beated older guys he bought himself a race bike and started competition.

Result: 33 victories and 8 titles!

World champion!

After he became world champion Time Trial on Tuesday, the race started Thursday 27/09/2018. Everybody hoped he could do the double but histories tells us it is not obvious.

Mass fall thwart the plan of Evenepoel

The Germans who made the race hard and difficult and no damage to the countless falls and skirmishes: the racing scenario went perfectly for the favorite Remco Evenepoel. Up to 70 kilometers from the finish, after all, because race number 13 suddenly had to hit the ground at a very bad moment due to a massive fall.

Evenepoel had no physical damage, but lost over 1'45 "with mechanical breakdown. The energy he had been able to put into an escape, he suddenly had to swallow up in a chase. "This is almost impossible", sighed José De Cauwer. Ex- coach of the National Cycling team.

But Evenepoel surprised again. In a hellish hunt, Evenepoel treated one after another to a cold. He was flying! With the support of a few teammembers- a compliment for a fantastic Van Wilder - Evenepoel came back at the top of the race at 40 kilometers from the finish.

At that time 2 riders were 1 minute in front of the whole group. After a few minutes of recuperation Evenepoel attacked again looking for the head of the race.

"Auf Wiedersehen"

The German Mayrhofer and the Czech Vacek had survived a first bomb on the first climb to Igls, but were constantly pressurized during the descent. Vacek soon paid a price for this: the Czech pulled in cramp through the continue pressure of Evenepoel, which seemed a bottomless barrel.

So one sandbag lost, even though Evenepoel was hardly worried about the bumpy German. The future professional simply steamed towards the last climb. After a few hundred meters of climbing, he stared at Mayrhofer for a moment, it was the signal to say goodbye and Evenepoel beat his pedals a bit more.

Mayrhofer emptied his pockets for the parking meter and saw Evenepoel becoming a speck in no time. The Belgium young start was able to enjoy his 20-kilometer solo. A solo is the trademark of Evenepoel, but this one is one that he will remember for a long time.

The new Eddy Merckx?

Did Belgium just found a new Eddy Merckx? I hope so. Belgium is a cycling country but let's be honest. Many topplayers are at their best on 18 years but there is no growth. Also the pressure will be important. Will he manage to keep working off line without the results with only one destination: " Winning a lot of races in pro cycling" ?

Quick-Step

Evenepoel will be a very young pro cycling. Team Quick-Step offered him a contract. Patrick Lefevre, who is the teammanager and a Belgian as well convinced the young God to join his team. I'm confident Patrick knows how to handle these young guys!

Tom Boonen said: " he can become the new me, I only see one disavantage, he doesn't know how to ride in a peloton. "

All the best Remco!
