There are many ways to engage your brain’s machinery in ways that help keep it healthy as an organ. The human brain is composed of about 86 billion neurons. Early researchers believed that neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons, stopped shortly after birth. Newer research has revealed that the brain never stops changing in response to learning. In instances of damage to the brain, such as during a stroke, the areas of the brain associated with certain functions may be damaged. Eventually, healthy parts of the brain may take over those functions and the abilities can be restored.
The brain’s plasticity—it’s ability to change not just functionally, but physically and chemically too—is most heavily engaged by activities that are intensive, repetitive and progressively changing. Those that emphasize refining the speed and accuracy of the brain’s sensory systems are most apt to help with other activities in daily life.
Here are some fitness tips to train your brain:
1. Start a good discussion
Engaging in a conversation is a great exercise for the brain. Of course some conversations are better than others for this purpose. Talking to a friend about how great "Dancing with the Stars" was last night is probably going to do less for your brain than brainstorming solutions to a challenging life problem.
2. Play games
And we´re not talking about Angry Birds. Do a brain game, like crossword puzzles, chess, cryptograms, etc. Faced with a problem, the brain is forced to consider various solutions, whether it be which word to choose, which move to make, etc.. That thinking process is the perfect exercise to engage the brain.
3. Switch hands
Learn to use your “other” hand. If you’re right-handed, use your left hand for some daily activities, like brushing your teeth or eating. That type of exercise takes something you know and puts it in a new and demanding context. Doing such an activity can drive plasticity on a large scale, as millions of neurons adjust to establish better control of your “other” hand.
4. Work with numbers
Replace the calculator with your brain the next time you need to multiple €256 by 6 or 13 centimeters by 8. Challenge your brain and yourself to come up with the right answer. Then double-check with the calculator, just to be sure.
And with the right nutrition in addition to your brain fitness program, you give your body and your brain in particular the right components to maintain your brain´s plasticity at peak. For example Biotin, Niacin, Thiamin and the Vitamins B2, B6, B12 and C contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Folate Vitamins B12 and D as well as Zinc have a role in the process of cell division.
