Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat Real Valladolid 2-1, and edge city rivals Real Madrid to lift the La Liga title on a tense final day of the season.

Diego Simeone’s side, who went to the final game as the clear favourites, were shocked in the early quarter as Oscar Plano’s strike put them on backfoot before recovering through goals from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez.

Real, who had also gone behind at the beginning itself, scored twice in the closing minutes to beat Villarreal 2-1, but it was not enough as the only way to be crowned was seeing their neighbors fail to win their game.

Atletico has now won their first domestic league crown since 2014, and their 11th overall with this deserved victory.

For Zinedine Zidane’s side, the win against Villa Real is a chance to end the campaign by keeping their heads high.

The season marred with several high profile injuries and lack of reinforcement ended for the defending champions as a year without silverware.

Meanwhile, Barcelona, who were in the race until the penultimate game, beat minnows Eibar 1-0 thanks to a late strike by Antoine Griezmann and finished the season on third behind Seville.

Barca's skipper Messi did not play the final game as the Argentine is looking for some rest ahead of this year's Copa America tournament.

Julen Lopetegui’s side will play their last match on Sunday against Alaves finished fourth irrespective of the result on Sunday.
