Belgium trailed 0-2 with twenty minutes to go but overturned the game and beat Japan 3-2. Genki Haraguchi opened the scoring 3 minutes into the second half and Takashi Inui netted a long-range effort in the 52nd minute to put stellar Belgium on the brink of elimination. The game turned around with the introduction of Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli as Belgium started to use more high balls towards their tall players. And it worked as Jan Vertonghen netted an incredible header on minutes 69 and Marouane Fellaini added his goal five minutes later. The game looked set to go into extra time but Belgium organized a lightning-fast counterattack deep into injury time and Nacer Chadli secured an encounter with Brazil in the quarterfinal.
