Colombia and Japan make it to the round of 16 as the South Americans earn a narrow win over rivals Senegal while the Asian side fall to a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Poland.

Colombia needed a victory to leapfrog their Group H rivals while Senegal would be happy with a draw. It seemed like Senegal could take their chances after Colombia leader James Rodriguez was subbed off before the break. However, it was Barcelona defender Yerry Mina who broke the deadlock on minutes 74 with a powerful header and took his side to the round of 16. Japan gambled as they lost to spirited Poland who only played for their pride. As a result, Japan and Senegal finished the group stage with identical points and goal difference with the Asian side progressing on the number yellow cards, which must have been a heartbreak for Aliou Cisse side.

Colombia and Japan will now face either England or Belgium in the round of 16.
