Still on the transfer talks, according to latest reports flying around at the moment, it is said that Gabriel’s deal to join Chelsea from Lille this summer could potentially be agreed. Also, it is also reported that the Blues have contacted Barca for the availability of their 26-year-old center back Umtiti and that the player prefers Chelsea ahead of Man United. As we all know, Chelsea are currently in search of a left-footed Center back, which is hot cake at the moment, as there are not many top quality left-footed center backs that are currently available for purchase.
While these two left-footed options are viable and one of them will be a great addition to this current Chelsea team, however, only Gabriel looks like the only realistic target and from the look of things at the moment, there is a huge possibility that he will be joining Chelsea next season. Reports and sources have made it known that Barca have slapped a 44 million pound price tag on Umtiti, which means that they are willing to let the player go if the right price is met. Umtiti is a top quality defender who have been really good for Barce so far, however, his injury problems have become a thing of concern for not only Barcelona but also one of the major reasons why some clubs may not be in a hurry to rush after the player regardless of his price tag. Nonetheless, Chelsea are still casting their net as wide as possible should in case they fail to land their prime target.
Even though it is said that Chelsea have agreed to the deal for Gabriel, they are not the only ones to have agreed deal as well, as it has been reported that a few other clubs including Everton have all agreed to the deal for the player. However, regardless of the other teams being involved in the race to sign the center back from Lille, Chelsea are most likely the favorites to land the player this summer. In my previous post, I talked about the player in more detail and gave reasons why I think Chelsea need a player like him to help bolster the team next season. We have all seen so far this season that Chelsea’s defense have been nothing to write home about and they have conceded so many goals already, probably the most of the top 4 teams. If they are able to add a left-footed center back like Gabriel, it means that all their center backs will play in their natural positions which will greatly benefit their gameplay and how Lampard wants his team to play, especially playing out from the back.
