During the midweek Charleroi and Club Brugge finally played the postponed game of round 5. Which should give us an better insight at the top of the table. But, yes there is again a but. Last weekend the game between Charleroi and KV Mechelen was suspended due to fog after 35 minutes, Charleroi was leading 1-0. To my surprise this game won't be continued but played over again, wiping out the lead of Charleroi! While this is according to the regulations, it feels a wrong decision.
Transfer news
Today is the last day of the winter transfer window. Until now it has been pretty quite at the teams of the Jupiler Pro League and maybe in all European competitions.
It was also the transfer window that I did see a new loan construction. Genk does loan goalkeeper Didillon from Anderlecht. They do pay his full salary so he is eligable to play against Anderlecht. Krc genk also has a buy option after the season. So far, nothing strange. But if they don't buy him, they still will have a 25% percentage of a future selling by Anderlecht.
Genk comes weakened out of the winter transfer window. Both Samata and Berge have been sold. With these sales they do collect 35 million euro. Beside selling both cornerstones of the team also Hagi has been loaned out to Rangers. For sure Berge will be missed, but I do wish him all the best at Sheffield United!
It looks like Club Brugge, will be capable of keeping their team together and even makes it stronger with the signing of Michael Krmencik, the target forward they were looking for.
Just like Club Brugge, it does seem that also AA Gent were capable of strenghtening their squad. Both winter signings made a great first impression during their home win against Genk. But it is of course easy to make an impact into an already smooth running machine!
Standard on the other side also looks weakened, with the outgoing transfer of Edmond and Mpoku!
The games of round 24!
It will be interesting to see if Brugge can start winning again, after back to back draws. But Antwerp will do everything in their power to prevent this. Antwerp can even decrease the lead of Brugge to 6 points with a surprising victory at Jan Breydel.
If Antwerp can pull this of we will have a complete different scenario as 3 weeks ago when Brugge was still leading with 10 points. A lead of 6 points at the end of the season would only be a 3 point lead during the play-offs!
Another interesting game is the one between Genk and Charleroi. Genk really needs a win to keep their PO I dreams alive. A loss or draw doesn't mean game over, but it could see Waregem come level again (at home against Waasland Beveren) and being passed by KV Mechelen (at home against Gent). Also interesting to see, who will be in the goal. I do think that Didillon will be the new number 1. And interesting to see who will fill up the gap that Berge left behind. While it is not all or nothing yet for Genk, the result of this game will give an indication for the rest of the season. Loosing this one could give even Anderlecht a boost.
If Anderlecht does win against Mouscron at home, it could bring back the gap with Genk to only 1 point!
At the bottom Cercle is playing again a match of the last chance! This time away at Eupen. With a win, they will suspend the mathematical relegation and as an extra bonus they will put pressure on Oostende. Oostendeis facing a home game aginst STVV, who did win back to back, with good performances. We have to remind ourselves that the last game of the regular season is Oostende - Cercle Brugge. So while we all know that Cercle is doomed, it could still become interesting at the bottom!
Cheers,
Peter
