The return of the English Premier League is about to commence. Thank the sports gods we’ll finally be able to see some football action after a long time of absence (it’s only been a month, but it sure felt like forever). The games in the EPL ‘19 are set this Friday at Southampton, which means that it’s time to gather at the table and see where the teams are standing.

To kick things off, let’s dive into the latest EPL rankings 2019 and hope our predictions will drive us somewhere good. Based on Nitrogen Sports Blog’s power rankings below, here’s what the top five teams have in store.

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola seems to be holding the City well with those impressive runs. Manchester City’s previous seasons were packed with plays that crushed through each enemy stronghold. As two-time titleholders with records set for most points and second-most points scored in a campaign during the last two seasons respectively, everyone expects the City to come for a back-to-back especially after adding Rodri from Atletico Madrid on this year’s lineup.

Liverpool

Europe’s champion is just beneath the City in the EPL rankings 2019. Liverpool is by far the only team that has what it takes to defeat Manchester City. Although falling short to capsize the latter’s defenses last season, the Champions League winner still managed to push limits to the final week in a tooth-and-nail battle. This season, Liverpool will be gunning for that title with a stronger drive to take home the elusive EPL win with the help of Alberto Moreno and Danny Ings.

Tottenham Hotspur

Last season was a challenging one for the Spurs as they had to deal with a meager squad following the advent of the World Cup. That, along with a few preseason distractions, gave them a hard time. But despite these constraints, Mauricio Pochettino still brought Tottenham to a considerable end, finishing fourth in the EPL and as runners-up in UEFA which is an overall good run for the team.

Chelsea

Frank Lampard is back in the Blues to shake things up. However, Lampard would have to make up for losing the services of Chelsea’s key players, including Eden Hazard who just entered Real Madrid. FIFA also placed a massive hump to Chelsea with that painful transfer ban that won’t get lifted until 2020. Quite a smack for the club if you ask me. But wonder why they’re still at the top half of the EPL rankings 2019? Their preseason runs prove that they have enough fortitude to rise above these handicaps.

Manchester United

Even if they haven’t won in ages and their last season was a downer, I still have my hopes up for Manchester United to do well in this season’s Premier League. After all, they remain as the winningest team in EPL history, and central defender Harry Maguire’s addition to the club might just spark a much stronger flame out there in the field.

Although assumptions for an unpredictable series like the English Premier League are never absolute, there’s a reason why the EPL rankings 2019 are formed this way. Guess we’ll just have to wait for the matches to come Friday and see if we’ve made some good smart guesses.
