The striker, who joins from Lyon, will sign a five-year contract with Madrid and be presented to the fans at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday

Real Madrid have released an official statement where they confirm that Mariano Diaz has re-joined the club one year after the player left for Lyon.

When Madrid sold Diaz to Lyon, they inserted a first option clause as well as retaining 35% of the player's future transfer. This makes the deal cheaper for them than it would be for any other side in Europe.

Mariano Díaz, who is 25 years old, arrived at Real Madrid as a youngster. He started playing for Castilla in the 2012/13 season before eventually forcing his way into the first team after making his senior debut against Celta Vigo in 2016 under Zinedine Zidane.

He didn't get many chances at Madrid and on the 20th June 2017 he was sold to Lyon. There he performed to a higher level, scoring 21 goals in 45 appearances. But those performances, as well as Sevilla's interest, have caused Madrid to buy back the striker to help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

The player will be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday at 13:30 (CET) and will later hold a press conference.
