Imagine the scene, you go to school after the summer break and catch up withyour friends. Later that day you become the youngest player in your clubs 111 year history.
Well thats what happened to 15 year old Luke Matheson of Rochdale AFC as Rochdale beat local rivals Bury in the Checkatrade Trophy at Spotland Stadium.
Brought on as a 13th minute substitute for the injured Connor Randall, Matheson was encouraged throughout by the fans and paid them back with a Man Of The Match performance.
"He was outstanding," said Rochdale manager Keith Hill.
"He's been training with the first team whilst he's not been at school during the summer and I'm really pleased for him that he got his chance. They're special nights when that happens.
"We know what he can do. It's not a leap of faith because we know he can do it, but is he cut out for the pressure of real men's football?"
"The supporters were receptive to Luke, and the players are and were as well."
To quote the late Sir Matt Busby.
"If they are good enough, they are old enough"
