Start of a wonderful career
Lieke Martens born at Bergen, 16 December 1992 started playing football at the age of five at RKVV Montagnards in Bergen, where she ended up in the F2. Via F2, F1, E2, E1, D1 and C1 she went to the youth at that club and around the age of eight she received her first invitation for a regional KNVB-team. Then she switched to Olympia '18 in Boxmeer, at the urging of national coach Vera Pauw. Later she also participated in the HvA project that was set up by the KNVB. In the summer of 2009 she moved to sc Heerenveen at age 16 to play in the Dutch Eredivisie.

In 2010, Martens participated with the Netherlands under 19 in the European Championship. She made four goals during the final tournament, with which she became top scorer of the tournament together with the German Turid Knaak. The Netherlands been eliminated in the semi-finals after a penalty shootout.

Martens received more votes than the American midfielder Carli Lloyd and the Venezuelan striker Deyna Castellanos. The vote for The Best FIFA Football Awards was divided into four categories: audience voting, captains of all national teams, national coaches of all national teams and a group of 200 sports journalists.

National Dutch Squad

Lieke was included in the selection for the 2015 World Cup by national coach Roger Reijners. In the first game, a 0-1 victory against New Zealand on June 6, 2015, Martens scored the only goal from the outside of the penalty area. This was also the first goal of the Dutch women's team on a world championship. Two years later, Martens also belonged to the Dutch selection for the European Soccer Championship 2017 in his own country. In the third group match against Belgium, she made the decisive goal (1-2), which put the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals against Sweden, Martens scored the 1-0 from a free kick and Martens also played an important part in the 2-0.
