The Scottish Women's football team have done something their male counterparts haven't done for a while and that is qualify for a football World Cup.

To qualify they needed to better the result of Group 2 leaders Switzerland, the Swiss could only manage a draw against Poland, whilst Scotland beat Albania 2-1.

It was a nervous end to the game since a winning goal for the Swiss or an equaliser for Albania would have seen the Swiss qualify automatically, instead it is Scotland who qualify for the first time in their history.

Interestingly they (Scotland) faced the Swiss last Thursday and won 2-1 but a 2 goal margin would have meant their destiny was in their own hands, instead they had to rely on Poland and hence the scenario of besting the Swiss result to qualify automatically.

Poland duly obliged, though Scotland gave themselves a chance by beating Albania, however it looked more likely they would secure a play off place given the task at hand, instead it will be the Swiss who will take that route to the finals.

Scotland opened the scoring through Kim Little on 9 minutes, which was a great start for them. However Scotland conceded just before half time when Doci hit the net for Albania. That is often a killer goal in football, the manager is ready to make a praiseworthy halftime team talk that suddenly gets ripped up.

However Scottish hopes were not to be dented and Scotland stuck to their task and the breakthrough came on 68 minutes when Ross scored a goal that will go down in Scottish women's football history.

Both teams were head and shoulders above the rest and it was left to the Swiss to falter in their last two games to hand automatic qualification to Scotland.

Scotland join England, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy and Spain who qualify automatically. Meanwhile the Swiss will join Austria, Belgium, Iceland, Denmark and Wales in the play offs.
