Steve Bruce made Danny Rose the third Newcastle United signing of the January transfer window tonight as the left-sided England defender switched from Tottenham Hotspur on loan for a reported fee of £2M (Daily Telegraph) and he is the perfect player to replace the injured Jetro Willems in the left wing back role.

The 29 year-old attacking full-back, whom new Manager Bruce hailed "a class act" just last week, is surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane after falling down the pecking order behind Ryan Sessegnon following Jose Mourinho's arrival at the club.

Yet Rose, who is desperate to remain in Gareth Southgate's plans for The European Championships and add to his 29 caps so far for The Three Lions, was prepared to move North for first-team football again having played for Sunderland in 2012-3.

Its an exciting signing for The Magpies who will provide a real pacy outlet down the left side and offer competition to Matt Ritchie as well as freeing the Scotsman for attacking duties as Newcastle seek to seal Premier League safety early and attack The FA Cup.

Rose has had his fair share of off-the-field issues with public battles with depression and the sceptre of racism both in his private and professional life yet a fresh start at a revitalised Newcastle United under Steve Bruce can tease out the very best of him as he seeks to secure his England place and the national team football that is his "salvation".
