While we’re busy counting the days and browsing through the odds for next week’s Presidents Cup, the golfers we’re betting on are down at the Albany Golf Club in The Bahamas for this year’s edition of the Hero World Challenge.

In case you don’t know what goes down in this event, it isn’t part of the regular scheduled tournaments for the PGA Tour. It’s sort of a side-tournament, if you will. But that doesn’t make it any less of a grand event. 18 players will be teeing off the contest, and 11 of them are from the American team playing for the Presidents Cup.

Which means that the Hero World Challenge purse payout isn’t short of a hefty prize. With the event spanning 3 days of golf action, the winner of the Hero World Challenge will receive a whopping $1 million from the purse total amounting to $3.5 million. Apart from the huge winnings, all the participating golfers will be earning their respective Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points as well.

A reminder that the Hero World Challenge isn’t just a pre-President’s Cup warmup for the pros. Every player will take this competition seriously (and so should we).

Key Players

Big names will be populating the Albany, with most of the lineup composed of American golfers we’ve seen before. Some of them include Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, and of course, Tiger Woods will all be at the Hero World Challenge who are gearing up to the United States team.

John Rahm won last year’s tournament, making him one of the top picks to shine in this field.

Woods will be back again in the arena for the first time after his win at the Zozo Championship in October. He also happens to be the tournament host, with most of the proceeds of the Hero World Challenge purse payout going into his charity, the TGR foundation.

Also joining the pack from the President’s Cup is Jordan Speith, who last won the Hero World Challenge in 2014 at the Isleworth Country Club outside Orlando. He placed 3rd in 2017, and since then he hasn’t won in the tournament. Let’s hope this year’s challenge will change that.
