This years Ryder cup was as entertaining as ever, and over a quarter of a million people got to see it live and in person. This was the dream sporting event for many who attended, including Corine Remande who travelled all the way from Egypt with her husband to witness the Ryder cup unfold at France's premium golf venue Le Golf National. Very Unlucky Lady Sometimes people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and this was very much the case for Corine, who was struck by the golf ball last weekend. Brooks Koepka is one of the longest drivers on tour and his ball reaches an average height of 119 yards, so if that hits you square in the face on the way down, it is going to hurt, a lot. Corine was unlucky enough to receive the blow to the eye and here eyeball is said to have exploded, and she now faces the prospect of being without sight in one eye for the rest of her life. Close one eye Close one of your eyes and see what this feels like. Now imagine trying to do everyday things with this new perspective. Things you take for granted like driving a car (no pun intended) would become tricky as your periphery vision is impaired. I really feel for her. to be fair to Brooks Koepka, he was more than apologetic and is distraught about it. He commented: "I’m heartbroken and all messed up inside. It’s sad and I really am torn up about it. She’s not going to be able to see out of her eye ever again. All because I hit a golf ball. This is definitely the one shot in my career that I am going to regret.” Legal Action to be taken Corine Remande will take legal action to pay for medical bills and I guess loss of earnings and emotional distress. But, who will she take legal action against? Will it be Brooks Koepka? Will is be the golf stewards for not warming her of the golf ball in flight? Will it be the golf course Le Golf National? Will it be the European tour? The answer is, I really don't know, but someone should be at the very least paying for her medical bills as a result of this tragic accident. How to prevent this in future The spectators really do stand a bit too close to the side of fairways for comfort at golf tournaments, and the players are not machines (except Jordan Speith, he's definitely a robot) so they will have errant tee shots every now and again. This particular incident was avoidable in my opinion though, as this happened on a short par 4, which most of the guys were opting to use a driver to try and reach. For this reason the cordon should have been moved well back, as the driver is the most likely club which a professional golfer will pull left or right. They are usually a lot straighter with their irons, hybrids and woods. Another solution would be better stewarding. These guys should have the flight of every ball coming in their direction, and be able to warn stewards with a shout of 'FORE' It doesnt help much when the player back on the tee shouts 'FORE' as the ball could be going anywhere. Finally, I guess some responsibility resides with the spectators, who should be watching the golf shots, and therefore avoid any potential aerial threats. Surgery and medical advancements Hopefully some day, through medical advances her optic nerve can be reconnected to a new eye, and she can regain full vision and in the meantime I hope she is successful in her legal action.
