sumo history in my knowledge

Sumo sport originated from Japan and has been rooted since the 1500s in the era of the Japanese empire. Formerly Sumo known as Sumai. This tradition is a symbol of heroism and also religious.

Precisely in the 16th century, the Japanese ruler named Oda Nobunaga often held a sumo tournament. At the time of Oda Nobunaga, Pesumo still wear the lower body cover of a loose rough cloth. In the Edo period, sumo wrestlers competed in wearing a beautiful and dashing mawashi called kesho mawashi. Now, kesho mawashi only worn sumo wrestlers while parading on the dohyō at the beginning of the tournament opening.

Within a year there are six major tournaments called Grand Tournaments. The Grand Tournaments were held 3 times in Tokyo in January, May and September and once each in Osaka in March, Nagoya in July and in Fukuoka in November. The length of each turnaround is 15 days starting on Sundays and ending on Sundays as well.

Rikishi at makunouchi and juryo level win at least 8 times and rikishi at makushita level, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi who win at least 4 times will be promoted to higher level, while the losers will be downgraded. Rikishi on the highest level who can win 13 or 14 times a game will be claimed as a champion.

Professional sumo tournaments are only held in Japan although professional sumo wrestlers come mostly from abroad. Takamiyama, Konishiki and Akebono are the names of three successful Hawaiian-born sumo wrestlers who are successful in Japan. Takamiyama was the first foreigner to become the top division champion in the early 1970s. Takamiyama trail followed by Konishiki who managed to win the top division in 3 tournaments. Konishiki was the first foreigner to reach the Ozeki rank.
