On Thursday, October 26th, 1911, the Philadelphia (now Oakland) Athletics defeated the New York (now San Francisco) Giants at Shibe Park in Philadelphia to clinch the eighth World Series four games to two. It was the second World Series championship for the Athletics franchise and the first that was won in Pennsylvania. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. Christy Mathewson (Giants)- P
Mathewson was the player of the game in game one, pitching a complete game with just one earned run given up on six hits and a walk in the Giants’ 2-1 win. Mathewson also started in games three and four as well.
4. Harry Davis (Athletics)- 1B
Davis took partial player of the game honors in game six, with a pair of RBIs, a pair of runs and a hit in the Athletics’ 13-2 win to claim the series. Overall, Davis hit five RBIs, three runs and five hits in the series.
3. Chief Bender (Athletics)- P
Bender was game four’s player of the game, as he pitched a complete game, allowing a pair of earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in the Athletics’ 4-2 win. Bender also started games one and six.
2. Eddie Plank (Athletics)- P
Plank was game two’s player of the game, with a complete game pitched giving up just one earned run on five hits in the 3-1 victory for the Athletics. Plank also appeared in game five as well.
1. Jack Coombs (Athletics)- P
Coombs earned player of the game honors in game three, as the Athletics won it 3-2 in 11 innings, with Coombs going the distance while allowing just one earned run on three hits and four walks to put his team ahead 2-1 in the series.
