On Tuesday, October 9th, 1928, the New York Yankees defeated the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis to win the 25th World Series four games to none. It was the third World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the first that was won in Missouri. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. Tom Zachary (Yankees)- P

Zachary went all nine innings in game three, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and a walk in the Yankees’ 7-3 victory.

4. George Pipgras (Yankees)- P

Pipgras had a complete game in game two, giving up two earned runs on four hits and four walks as the Yankees claimed the 9-3 victory.

3. Babe Ruth (Yankees)- LF

Ruth captured player of the game honors in game four, with three RBIs on three runs and three hits as the Yankees won it 7-3 to pick up the series sweep.

2. Waite Hoyt (Yankees)- P

Hoyt picked up player of the game in game one, pitching a complete game with one earned run on three hits and three walks in the Yankees’ 4-1 win.

1. Lou Gehrig (Yankees)- 1B

Gehrig got player of the game honors in games two and three, as he drove in three RBIs on two runs and a hit and a walk in the Yankees’ 9-3 game two win, followed with a game three performance that saw him get three RBIs with two runs, two hits and two walks as the Yankees won it 7-3.
