On Monday, October 5th, 1953, the New York Yankees defeated the Brooklyn (now Los Angeles) Dodgers at Yankee Stadium in New York to win the 50th World Series four games to two. It was the 16th World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the 19th that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #17 Carl Erskine (Dodgers)- P
Erskine was the player of the game in game three, pitching a complete game with two earned runs given up on six hits and three walks as the Dodgers took the 3-2 win.
4. #1 Billy Martin (Yankees)- 2B
Martin earned game one’s player of the game, grabbing three RBIs with a run and three hits, as the Yankees started out the series with a 9-5 win.
3. #7 Mickey Mantle (Yankees)- CF
Mantle picked up player of the game honors in game five, earning four RBIs with a run and a hit as the Yankees claimed the 11-7 victory.
2. #30 Eddie Lopat (Yankees)- P
Lopat got player of the game in game two, going all nine innings with a pair of earned runs given up on nine hits and four walks in the Yankees’ 4-2 victory.
1. #16 Whitey Ford (Yankees)- P
Ford earned player of the game in game six, pitching seven innings while allowing just one earned run on six hits and a walk as the Yankees won it 4-3 to clinch the series victory.
