On Sunday, October 21st, 1973, the Oakland A’s (now Oakland Athletics) defeated the New York Mets at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland to win the 70th World Series four games to three. It was the seventh World Series championship for the Athletics franchise and the third that was won in California. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #4 Rusty Staub (Mets)- RF

Staub got player of the game in game four, hitting five RBIs with one run, four hits and a walk as the Mets won it 6-1.

4. #36 Jerry Koosman (Mets)- P

Koosman earned player of the game honors in game five, taking the win with six and a third innings pitched, allowing no earned runs on three hits and four walks as the Mets went on to a 2-0 victory.

3. #19 Bert Campaneris (A’s)- SS

Campaneris picked up player of the game in game seven, as he drove in two RBIs with two runs and three hits as the A’s got the 5-2 win to claim the series.

2. #30 Ken Holtzman (A’s)- P

Holtzman was game one’s player of the game, going five innings with one earned run on four hits and three walks in the A’s 2-1 victory.

1. #27 Catfish Hunter (A’s)- P

Hunter was player of the game in games three and six, as he went six innings while allowing a pair of earned runs on seven hits and three walks in game three for a 3-2 win in 11 innings, while game six saw him pitch seven and a third innings with one earned run on four hits and a walk as the A’s took a 3-1 victory.
