On Sunday, October 27th, 1985, the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals at Royals Stadium (now Kauffman Stadium) in Kansas City to win the 82nd World Series four games to three. It was the first World Series championship for the Royals franchise and the ninth that was won in Missouri. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #6 Willie Wilson (Royals)- CF
Wilson earned player of the game in game five with a pair of RBIs, along with two hits in the Royals’ 6-1 victory to begin the series comeback.
4. #24 Darryl Motley (Royals)- RF
Motley picked up player of the game in game seven, driving in three RBIs with a run and three hits as the Royals went on to take an 11-0 win to earn the series championship.
3. #20 Frank White (Royals)- 2B
White grabbed player of the game honors in game three, as he knocked in three RBIs with two runs and two hits as the Royals won it 6-1.
2. #37 Charlie Leibrandt (Royals)- P
Leibrandt pitched his way to player of the game honors in game six, going seven and two-thirds innings with one earned run allowed on four hits and two walks in the Royals’ 2-1 victory.
1. #30 John Tudor (Cardinals)- P
Tudor got player of the game honors in games one and four, as game one saw him pitch six and two-thirds innings with one earned run given up on seven hits and a pair of walks in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win, while in game four he had a complete game shutout, with five hits and a walk given up as the Cardinals claimed a 3-0 win.
