Unless you have been living under a rock, you are part of a football world bearing witness to the birth of a new rising star. Anyone who follows football at all has more than likely already heard the name Tua Tagovailoa. If you haven't yet then you will soon. This kids name is soon going to become a household name. Tagovailoa is in the midst of leading the Alabama Crimson Tide to what might possibly go down as their most dominant season in history. That's saying something for a team that has long been one of the best in college football. This team has made the jump from elite contender to virtually unstoppable under the leadership of their sophomore quarterback.
Tagovailoa has been putting up some incredible numbers this season and the Tide has been making teams look like they don't even belong on the field with them. Yesterday, the 6'1 phenom took his production to a whole new level in the dismantling of # 23 ranked Texas A&M. Tagovailoa took to the air early and often, throwing for touchdowns with ease. The dual-threat quarterback was relentless as he threw for 387 yards and a whopping 5 touchdowns. Numbers that now put him among the elite quarterbacks in Alabama history. The 5 touchdowns ties the single-game record set by Gary Hollingsworth back in 1989 and the 387 passing yards ties him for third with AJ McCarron. There is a good chance that a lot more Crimson Tide quarterback records might be at risk of falling as this young man is just starting to show us what he is capable of. The best may still be yet to come.
As Tagovailoa continues to wow the college football world and demonstrates why many are now calling him the best quarterback in the nation, I can't help but think about the other quarterback on the team. The one who lead the Tide to the National Championship game last year only to get benched and see his college football career come crashing down. Jalen Hurts was on top of the world. Hurts started for Alabama as a freshman and he was putting up fantastic numbers. He was even being talked about as one of the best quarterbacks to come along in Crimson Tide history. Jalen led Alabama to the National Championship game as a freshman, losing to Clemson in a very tight game. Then after a bad half of football in his second consecutive championship game, it was all over. Nobody would blame him if Jalen Hurts has some hurt feelings.
The writing was on the wall when Alabama signed the freshman phenom Tua Tagovailoa. All reports coming out of high school were that Tagovailoa was the real deal and that he was going to shine at the college level. For Jalen Hurts, it was only a matter of how long he would be able to hold onto the starting quarterback job. Really, if it wasn't for Hurts being there Tagovailoa would have very likely started as a freshman. Now, he gets to sit and watch as the team that was once his is on the verge of making a major statement in college football. What does this mean for his future? Hurts was the starting quarterback for one of the best football teams in the nation and all eyes were on him. How you produce at the college level dictates your potential for snagging an NFL draft pick and having a career beyond college. It is hard to show your skills and talents to NFL teams sitting on the bench.
All eyes will be on the Crimson Tide as this season unfolds and football fans get to see just how great this team can be. To see a team that consistently has a dominant rushing game and stellar defence now add elite quarterbacking to the mix is just scary. I can't see them losing a game at all and to be honest, I have a hard time thinking many of their games will be even close. I am looking forward to seeing the numbers that Tua Tagovailoa puts up along the way and how many single season Bama records will fall. Is it possible that they have already engraved his name on the Heisman?
As for Hurts, itis too bad that teams can't trade in college football. He is a great talent himself that is now buried on the bench and will only ever see the field in blowouts or in the case of an injury. I have never personally been a Crimson Tide fan but as someone who follows everything football I can't help but be enamoured but what is unfolding this year in Alabama.
