Source: theadvertiser.com / QB Joe Burrow tossed a CFP record 7 TD passes - all in the first half - as the Tigers scored a record 49 first half points in their 63-28 complete demolition of the Sooners.

The Peach Bowl kicked off shortly after 4pm eastern time yesterday, but the game was essentially over before it even began. The Sooners were a two touchdown underdog, as Vegas, and most pundits out there (including this guy) thought they were just too suspect on defense to be able to slow down Joe Burrow & the Tigers vaunted passing attack.

-

That proved to be exactly the case as the Sooners were absolutely carved apart from the get-go. After a sizzling first quarter ended with LSU jumping out to a 21-7 lead behind 3 Burrow TD passes, the second quarter was even worse for Oklahoma fans. Burrow and the Tigers passing game was even better in the second quarter, getting 4 more scoring tosses from their standout QB, while outscoring the hapless Sooners 28-7 in the second frame. As the teams trotted off the field for halftime, the first national semifinal was already put-away, a done deal, in the bag, whatever saying you want to choose would fit the bill. After perhaps the greatest first half in the history of college football (or pretty damn close at the very least), everyone was left in awe of what they witnessed over the first 30 minutes of action from Atlanta.

By the time the dust settled on the first half beatdown, QB Joe Burrow, WR Justin Jefferson, & the Tigers had shattered several CFP and Bowl game records. Burrow set the new CFP record for TD passes in a game with 7 (in the first half!), which also tied the single-game record for any Bowl game in history. His 403 passing yards were a CFP record for passing yards in a half, and Justin Jefferson's 4 TD receptions (again, in the first half alone) were a new CFP & Bowl game record.

Burrow was an insane 21-27 for 403 yards and 7 TDs in the FIRST HALF ALONE & WR Justin Jefferson piled 9 catches for 186 yards and the 4 scores all in the first half as well. One other note on the first half - the 49 points scored by the Tigers were a CFP record for points scored in a half.

LSU put it on cruise-control in the second half, coasting to a 63-28 absolute demolition of the #4 team in the country. For anybody who wasn't convinced by all of the pre-game chatter about how this year's Oklahoma D was much- improved over the past few years' lackluster units, they were certainly proved right in this one. The Sooners' defense looked out-matched, lost, and flat-out terrible from the onset, as they are now 0-4 in CFP semifinal games. Jalen Hurts played better in the second half, and give him and the Sooners' O credit for not packing it in after the first 30 minutes, but this one is all about Coach O, Joe Burrow, and the dominant performance turned in by the Tigers.

Star HB Clyde Edwards-Helaire was hobbled by a hamstring injury coming in, and wasn't needed for much as the Tigers were so impressive from the get-go. He played sparingly at the onset, but ultimately was able to rest for pretty much the entire game, and will now have another two weeks to get fully healthy ahead of the big-time Title game showdown with Clemson. It was just another perk for the Tigers, who appear to be completely & utterly unstoppable on offense. The much-maligned defense continued its upswing as of late, and really did an exceptional job of limiting Hurts & the Sooners' explosive offense, as especially evidenced by the 5-18 passing performance turned in by Hurts in the first half.

Once the final seconds ticked away in the Peach Bowl, the record books had literally been completely re-written by LSU. Along with all of the first half records set by QB Joe Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner also set CFP single game records for passing yards (493), total yards in a game with 515, and total TDs with 8 (he added a 3rd quarter rushing score for good measure). WR Justin Jefferson finished with a CFP record 227 yards receiving, and the aforementioned 4 receiving scores were also a new record. In addition to the record 49 points scored in the 1st half, the 63 they scored for the game, was also a new record. Finally, the whopping 692 total yards of offense piled up by the Tigers, also set a new single game CFP record.

In all, 10 CFP single-game records were shattered and replaced by the LSU onslaught. It's a truly mind-boggling performance, and has us all eagerly anticipating how they will matchup with the defending National Champs and their formidable defense, when they take on Clemson on January 13th in the National Championship game. In the mean time, they left us all to marvel at that remarkable performance for the ages.
