The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, the 105th overall championship in the history of the NFL. The two teams previously played against each other in Super Bowl LVII during the 2022 season.
The Chiefs became the first team since the 2004 New England Patriots (and 17th team overall) to win back-to-back NFL titles in the most recent Super Bowl, defeating the San Francisco 49ers as they also earned the 2022 championship against the Eagles. Now, Kansas City has the opportunity to be the first team to earn three consecutive NFL titles since the Green Bay Packers did so from 1965 to 1967. Despite the Chiefs coming up short against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV during the 2020 season, they broke a 50-year title drought the year before, also against the 49ers. Additionally, Kansas City won Super Bowl IV over the Minnesota Vikings while in the American Football League during the 1969 season, after losing in the first Super Bowl ever played in 1966 against the Packers.
Meanwhile, the Eagles enter Super Bowl LIX at a record of 4 for 8 in their past championship appearances, starting off by winning back-to-back championships themselves in 1948 and 1949. The team added a third title in 1960, though their Super Bowl debut in the 1980 season ended in a loss to the Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders. Philadelphia captured Super Bowl LII at the expense of the Patriots, but lost to the Chiefs 38-35 in the previously mentioned Super Bowl LVII.
Out of the 256 potential Super Bowl matchups, 53 of them have occurred so far.
The most common title matchup out of the ones that could still be possible to re-occur remains the Cleveland Browns v. Detroit Lions, as the teams have faced each other four times, coming in 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1957.
