In a slightly bizarre move today, my beloved Oiler's signed Jason Garrison to a professional tryout.  Garrison is a 33 year old defensemen who's seen his career decline over the past five seasons.  He only managed to play in 8 NHL games last season for the Vegas Golden Knights and spent the rest of the year in the AHL.  Seems very unlikely to me that a older player who couldn't keep a roster spot on his team last season, most likely won't be changing that this season.

I'm not angry about bringing a player like Garrison to training camp. He's a veteran and the Oiler's absolutely need a few more veterans through out the roster but he's going to have a tough time battling past new signings Jakub Jerabek and Kevin Gravel as well as out performing youngsters Even Bouchard and Ethan Bear.  I have a hard time seeing how you can justify an eventual roster spot for Garrison.

He could surprise and come into training camp with some extra fire after being demoted to the AHL last season.  If he plays well and proves he deserves a contract, I will gladly retract my statements but until then I reserve the right to be doubtful of the success of this move.
