On Saturday, April 18th, 1942, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto to win the 29th Stanley Cup Finals four games to three. It was the fourth Stanley Cup championship for the Maple Leafs franchise, and the 11th that was won in Ontario. As of this writing, this is the only Finals that a team has come back from being down three games to none to win the championship. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #15 Nick Metz (Maple Leafs)- F
Metz earned partial player of the game in game four, scoring one goal and one assist as the Maple Leafs picked up their first win of the series 4-3.
4. #5 Eddie Bush (Red Wings)- D
Bush claimed player of the game honors in game three, as he grabbed a goal (and was the only Red Wings defenseman to score a goal during the series) along with four assists in the game as the Red Wings went on to win 5-2.
3. #11 Sweeney Schriner (Maple Leafs)- F
Schriner picked up player of the game in game seven, getting two goals as the Maple Leafs won it 3-1 to complete the comeback and win the series.
2. #18 Don Metz (Maple Leafs)- F
Metz claimed player of the game in game five and partial player of the game in game six, getting a hat trick in game five with three goals as well as two assists in the Maple Leafs’ 9-3 victory, while game six saw him add another goal as the Maple Leafs picked up a 3-0 win.
1. #10 Don Grosso (Red Wings)- F
Grosso scored player of the game honors in games one and two, as game one saw him get two goals and an assist in the Red Wings’ 3-2 victory, while game two saw him pick up another pair of goals as the Red Wings went on to win 4-2.
