In what has become a 4th of July tradition, Joey Chestnut set a world record devouring 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes on his way to his 11th title in the competition. He bested the 2nd place finisher by 10 hot dogs. The contest takes place every 4th of July at Coney Island in Brooklyn New York.
History Of The Contest
The contest was inaugurated on July 4th 1916. Since its inception the length of time to eat the hot dogs has varied from up to an hour to its current format of only 10 minutes. Since 2001 there have been only 3 different winners of the contest. Joey Chestnut has taken home the win a record 11 times(2007-2014; 2016-2018), Takeru Kobayashi has won it 6 times(2001-2006), and Matt Stonie interrupted Chestnuts dominance by taking home his only title in 2015. The record has increased from 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes back in 2001 to the new record of 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes this year. It makes one wonder just how many more hot dogs it's possible for a human being to eat in a span of only 10 minutes.
