To piggyback a little off my last post about 12 Of My Favorite Sayings/Slangs/lingo I bring you 12 popular Nicknames and Slang of Poker Hands.

One of the most popular nicknames that people have heard of is AMERICAN AIRLINES or POCKET ROCKETS. American Airlines is of course two aces (AA). It’s the best starting hand in Texas Holdem. COWBOYS are the second best starting hand (KK). If the Cowboys and Rockets had a baby you would have BIG SLICK (AK). Big Slick is a good starting hand but be careful with it. You still have to make a better hand when your against SIEGFRIED AND ROY (QQ), HOOKS (JJ), SNOWMEN (88), WALKING STICKS (77) or any other pocket pair.

There are a few poker hands that are named after people. A hand I try to be sneaky with sometimes is  DOLLY PARTON (9 5). Named after Dolly’s 1980’s Academy Award nominated and four time Grammy Award nominated song 9 to 5.

MOTOWN (J5). Jack five got the nickname Motown because of how similar it sounds to The Jackson Five. One of Motown's most well known groups. Michael Jackson and his siblings were signed to American record company, Motown, in 1968 and went on to rock the world with there one of a kind sound and talent.

The last hand named after people I’d like to talk about is the DOYLE BRUNSON (10 2). Doyle Brunson won the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 1976 with 10 2. On the final hand of the tournament Doyle was out flopped by Jesse Alto that was holding Ace Jack. Alto hit two pair on the flop while Brunson just hit his 10. Doyle went all in. Of course Jesse called with top two pair. With somewhere around 3% for Brunson to win the pot Alto was already counting his chickens before the hatched. Then like magic Doyle went runner runner deuces to catch a full house and with the main event. It's hard to image the feelings Jesse Alto was feeling when the dealer throughout the miraculous deuce on the river. But as Doyle like to say "that's poker folks".

There are a few “made hands” or 5 card poker hands that have nicknames. BROADWAY and A WHEEL are both sayings for straights. When you have Broadway you've got the best straight possible (10-Ace). The Wheel is the lowest possible straight (Ace-5). It's good to remember that an Ace can be the highest card in the deck or the lowest card. Also in some poker games like Razz (a low game) the Wheel is the best hand possible.
