We are well in the middle of the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and there are no surprises with the tournament favorites who can win it all in the first tournament held in Asia.

Pool stages are looking to close on October 13 despite a possible typhoon looking to hit parts of the “The Land of the Rising Sun” that might affect match schedules over the weekend but the Rugby World Cup standings are looking set right now for the quarter-finals.

Difficult as it may be to pick a sole contender, I would like to dive into some of the Rugby World Cup favorites that are flocking the books and are yet to meet bettor’s expectations.

South Africa

After demolishing Canada with a 66-7 victory, South Africa secured their berth for the quarter-finals in a tough pool B. Winning it all at the 2019 Rugby Championships puts South Africa at the top of the Rugby World Cup standings for securing the World Cup Title this year despite having lost early to another Rugby juggernaut in New Zealand.

The South African squad looks to use their depth to move forward into the tournament but the loss to the Kiwis would lead them to face the Irish team in the quarter-final phase.

New Zealand

Despite a quiet campaign towards the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the Kiwis still have the strongest team in the tournament & have proven that after winning against the 2019 Rugby Champion – South Africa in the early stages in pool B.

The New Zealand team still have the best performers in the tournament & the win over the Africans definitely gives them an easier schedule towards the knockout phase. New Zealand will be facing Italy to close out the pool phase to likely head into the next stage atop the standings. The 2015 titleholders still look poised to finish the tournament on the podium. But even as heavy Rugby World Cup favorites, this campaign would be one of their toughest World Cups to predict.

England

Coming in healthy towards the 2019 Rugby World Cup is a breath of relief for the Englishmen as the team looks like it is peaking just right and on time. England looks to face pool C rival France over the weekend to decide who will come out on top of the group but the match is threatened by Super Typhoon Hagibis just off the Pacific Ocean.

Games that are cancelled will be recorded as scoreless draws with both teams already qualified for the next stage. Winner of the group will likely face-off with Australia in the next round with New Zealand or Ireland for the 2nd placer. England last won the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and would like to add another title after falling to South Africa in 2007. Still, their top spot in the Rugby World Cup standings is still in tact.
