Both Universities will rekindle a long standing friendship through a series of friendlies which includes Debate, Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball and Seminar.

UG-UI Relations

Both Universities were established in 1948 by the British on the recommendation of the Asquith Commission, on Higher Education in the then British colonies. Based on the Asquith Commission set up in 1943 to investigate Higher Education, the Commission recommended among other things, the setting up of University Colleges in association with the University of London. Both Universities have the same architectural designs, the same colours and paraphernalia’s.

University of Ghana’s bilateral relations with University of Ibadan (UI) was initiated to celebrate and sustain this development and dates as far back as 1951. This relation with UI influenced the birth within the West Africa sub-region in 1965 the West African University Games (WAUG) first held at University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The existence of these two organisations subsequently led to the formation of the Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Games first hosted by University of Ghana, Legon in 1975.

Team UG

The relations between both Universities transcend sports. The two universities have had exchanges between faculties – assessments, student’s thesis, student’s supervision and so on.

During their last visit to Ghana in April 2017, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu (Vice-Chancellor of UG) muted that he looks forward to a future where faculty members and students will have the possibilities of accessing the libraries of both universities and other areas in academia. The two universities are working on that and there will be a follow up during the games this year.
