The 2019 French Open has a 1st-time women's winner, 23-year-old Australian, Ashleigh Barty was crowned the champion on Saturday afternoon at the Court Philippe-Chatrier after a crushing defeat of Czech's 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-3 in straight set in just over an hour. With her victory, Barty now became the 1st Australia Grand Slam winner since Samantha Stosur's triumph in the 2011 US Open and the 1st French Open winner since Margaret Court won the 1973 French Open title.
Prior to the final, Barty and Vondrousova had played each other just 2 times at Masters tournament, with Barty winning both, the 2017 7-5, 7-6(7-1) Birmingham win, and 2018 6-3, 7-5 Cincinnati triumph. However, those Barty wins were on hard and grass surfaces and not clay, she has now added a clay victory over her opponent.
Barty's triumph means she will now be the new World number 2 ranked women player when the rankings are updated. Vondrousova was aiming to become the 1st teenage champion at Roland Garros since Iva Majoli of Switzerland won the crown in 1997, but it wasn't to be.
Ashleigh Barty's run to the French Open final include;
Ashleigh Barty had never played in any Grand Slam semifinal before, her last campaign in 2018 French open-ended in a round of 64 loss to Serena Williams, Barty battled past teenage-star, Americas 17-year-old Amanda Anisimova, who also created an upset in the quarterfinal by knocking out the tournament's defending champion, 3rd seed Simona Halep in straight sets. Barry raced to a 5-0 lead against Amanda in the 1st set but surprisingly lose the set 6-7(4-7), but the Australian fought back to take the next 2 sets 6-3, 6-3 to reach her 1st ever Grand Slam final, the 1st Australian to play in the French Open final since Samantha Stosur lost the 2010 final 6-4, 7-6(7-2) to Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
Other wins are;
• R128: 6-3, 6-3 win over Jessica Pegula(USA)
• R64: 7-5, 6-1 win over Danielle Rose Collins(USA)
• R32: 6-3, 6-1 win over Andrea Petkovic(GER)
• R16: 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win over Sofia Kenin(USA)
• R8: 6-3, 7-5 win over Madison Keys(USA)
Safe to say Barty is responsible for the elimination of the majority of Americas players.
Marketa Vondrousova's run to the final include;
Like Barty, Czech's Marketa Vondrousova had never played in any Grand Slam semifinals before her Friday triumph over Konta, her last year's French Open ended right from matchday 1, a 1st round loss to Ana Bogdan of Romania, however, just a year on, Vondrousova is playing at the biggest stage of her career. She defeated new favorite, British number 1, Johanna Konta in a surprising 7-5, 7-6(7-2) straight sets, to set up a final with Barty. Konta has been playing some great tennis all tournament and was expected to be in the final with all the top seeds in her half has been eliminated, but either she let herself down when it mattered most or her opponent, who had not to drop a single set all tournament was just too strong for her. Sweet revenge for Vondrousova who lost to Konta at the Rome Masters last month.
Other wins are;
• R128: 6-4, 6-3 win over Yafan Wang(CHN)
• R64: 6-4, 6-0 win over Anastasia Potapova(RUS)
