Andy Murray graced his comeback on Tuesday with a victory over James Duckworth. The Briton won at the ATP-tournament of Brisbane after months of injuries with 6-3 and 6-4 and that caused the necessary emotion.

"It is not easy to describe my feelings with one sentence or one answer", said the emotional afterwards in an interview on the hard court track in the Australian city.

The former number one in the world has been staggering for a year and a half. In 2018 the US Open was the only Grand Slam tournament in which he could participate and he was eliminated in New York in the second round. His last party was in September.

"The past eighteen months have been very tough, with a lot of ups and downs, and it took a lot of effort to be back on the track, but now I'm glad to be back again."

'I was a bit nervous'

The victory at Duckworth will give Murray confidence towards the Australian Open, although the Australian is only the number 234 in the world. "I was a bit nervous, but I thought it was okay during the race," said Murray.

Still, the question is whether the triple Grand Slam winner is fit enough to get far in Melbourne after he announced last week that his hip is still not pain free.

Murray does not set the bar too high in the coming weeks. "I want to enjoy it as much as possible that I am back on the track", said the 31-year-old Schot after his victory in Brisbane. He also does not want to look too far ahead. "I do not know how long I will keep this up, we have to wait."

Murray uses protected ranking

Because of his physical malfunction, Murray dropped to the 240th place in the world rankings, but he did not have to qualify in Brisbane. He uses his protected ranking as number two of the world, which he can use for a limited number of tournaments because of his long-term injury.

Murray is also immediately admitted to the main tournament at the Australian Open. He must fear heavy resistance in the first rounds, because he is not placed.

The Australian Open starts on Monday, January 14 and on Sunday, January 27 is the final. Murray never won the title on the 'Happy Slam', but did reach the final five times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016). Last year, Roger Federer took the title.
