Form Guide

Everton

Everton have been on a poor run of form since the turn of the year and currently find themselves in 9th place in the Premier League table. The Toffees have managed to accumulate 36 points so far this season, a staggering 33 less than theeir local rivals, Liverpool. Over the previous 5 games, Everton won 2 and lost 3.

Statistically, Everton have been bang average for most of this season. They've scored 39 times, an average of 1.39 goals per game. However, they have also conceded 39 times at the other end of the pitch, and this is something Everton really need to address if they want to be considered anything more than a midtable team.

Liverpool

Liverpool are currently sat in 1st place in the Premier League table on 69 points, 1 point ahead of title rivals Manchester City. Over the previous 5 games, Liverpool won 2 and drew 3.

Statistically, Liverpool have been impressive all season. The Reds have scored 64 times in the Premier League, an average of 2.21 goals per game. Defensively, Liverpool have improved massively having only conceded 15 times, an average of 0.52 goals per game

Head to Head

In the previous 10 meetings between the clubs, Liverpool won 5 and there were 5 draws. Everton have failed to record a win in this fixture in the last 18 matches, with their last win being back in October 2010.

Pre Match Analysis

Everton

The best Everton can probably hope for at this stage of the season is to finish in 7th position in the Premier League table. In that sense, therefore, you could say that Everton's season is pretty much over at this point in time, but the Toffees will want to give everything they have in this match to try to derail Liverpool's title challenge. The difficult Everton have is that they haven't been playing well for a few months now and Liverpool are coming into this game on the back of a 5-0 thrashing of Watford at Anfield. Many people will suggest that form goes out of the window in derby games, but the statistics in this fixture suggest that isn't actually the case.

If Everton are going to get anything out of this game then they're going to have to bring Liverpool down to their level. That isn't to say that Everton aren't a decent footballing team, but Liverpool are head and shoulders above them. If they can force Liverpool to get involved in a scrappy game with very little fluidity then there will be opportunities for Everton to get the ball forward in counter-attacks and set pieces. The Blues do, however, need to be careful that they don't get caught out at the other end as both Salah and Mane were looking back to their best in the midweek game at Anfield and could punish any mistakes.

Liverpool

Liverpool sent a statement to the Premier League with an emphatic win over Watford on Wednesday but this game is even more important. If Liverpool can win at Goodison Park then they'll have taken 7 points from a possible 9 that included games against their two biggest rivals. However, a loss here would mean that Liverpool only managed 4 points, and that would be seen as a big hit to their Premier League title challenge.

Strategically, Liverpool need to try to play their natural game as much as possible because they are by far the better footballing team. Everton haven't been in good form recently and this is probably Liverpool's biggest opportunity to go out there and dominate Everton in their own ground. The Reds do need to be cautious, however, because Everton are a capable team and they will want to have their say in the title race now that their season is effectively over. With Fabinho as an anchor, Liverpool should look to spring forward into attack as quickly as possible via Wijnaldum, who can move the ball out wise to Mane and Salah to test the Everton defensive line.

Prediction

The Merseyside derby is a game that I never look forward to because you just don't know what will happen on the day. Nonetheless, I believe Liverpool are in a much better place than Everton going into this game and think the Reds will get the win.

Prediction: Liverpool win

Score Prediction: Everton 1 - 3 Liverpool
