Mayank Agarwal might be playing just his second test series but he has already sealed the opening spot for himself as of now.Scoring double ton in first test match against South Africa and then following it up with yet another ton in second test ,he showed if team management invests on him then he can be an option for long term.
Coming to limelight with his steller performance in 2010 U19 WC,the then Agarwal, whose batting technique and style of play was modelled around legendary opener Virender Sehwag ,started his domestic carrier with T 20 cricket initially. His dashing batsmanship earned him an IPL contract in 2011 .However, his numbers were nowhere near his true potential. He showed his caliber in domestic matches but was largely inconsistent.
Right handed opening batsman focused on his fitness after 2014-15 domestic season which apparently helped him with his mental game as well.2017-2018 domestic season saw Mayank Agarwal's new avatar, where he scored more than 1000 runs in just a month. He finished as the highest run scorer in Ranji trophy that year.Further, his performance in Vijay Hazare trophy 2018-2019 literally broke open the doors of India selectors. He was announced as the replacement for injured Prithvi Shaw in the Indian test team for Australia tour .Making debut against a fiery Aussie bowling lineup, opener made his mark scoring 76 runs in his first innings at the MCG.After an impressive tour,he was also called in the Indian World cup team as a replacement for injured Vijay Shankar.
No one knows what future holds, but if team management shows enough faith on him he can do what Virender Shewag did for India for a long time.
