Lasith Malinga, who was dropped as captain, has been included in the Sri Lanka's 15-man squad for the World Cup. Malinga has been replaced by Test captain Dimut Karunaratne who has not played one-day cricket since the 2015 World Cup.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chief Shammi Silva, while announcing the team said, "We hope he will play for the country." There was speculation that after capturing captaincy he would say goodbye to cricket. Selection Committee chief Asantha DeMail said, "I have spoken to him on the phone and told him the reason.

Sri Lanka have to play against New Zealand in the World Cup on June 1. Apart from Karunaratne in Sri Lanka's World Cup team, Life Mendes, Milinda, Sirvardhne, Jeffrey Vendresi have also come back.
