A group of divers have linked two underwater caves east of Mexico and unveiled the findings believed to be the world's largest underwater cave, Reuters reported Wednesday (17/1). The Gran Acuifero Maya project (GAM), dedicated to the study and conservation of underwater waters on the Yucatan peninsula, says the 347-kilometer (216-mile) cave was identified after exploring a labyrinth of underwater canals for months.

Near the coastal resort of Tulum, the group discovered a cave system known as Sac Aktun, measuring 263 kilometers, connected to the 83-kilometer-long Dos Ojos system, GAM said in a statement. Because of that, Sac Aktun now buffers Dos Ojos.

The director of GAM and the underwater archaeologist Guillermo de Anda, said the "amazing" discovery will help understand the cultural development of the region which is rich and dominated by Maya civilization before conquest by the Spanish Nation.

"The discovery makes us appreciate more clearly, how the rituals are run, the pilgrimage locations and most of all, the great pre-Hispanic settlements we know of, are now emerging," he told Reuters.

Relics of the Maya are found in the Yucatan peninsula. The Maya Cities are built on a wide network of sewers connected to underwater waters, known as cenotes.

Some cenotes have certain religious values for the Maya, whose descendants still inhabit the area. [fwa / au]
