One of the most persistent transfer rumors since Ronald Koeman took over the coaching job at FC Barcelona is to sign Georginio Wijnaldum from Liverpool to the Catalan big club but the transfer has not yielded any result.

The reason is Philippe Coutinho's transfer to FC Barcelona in January 2018. Thus, a very special clause was included in the Brazilian's sale agreement, which until 2021 makes it impossible or at least very expensive for Barca to buy players in Liverpool.

Although FC Barcelona last summer made an offer for Wijnaldum, who has a contract expiration this summer, the Catalan big club according to the Coutinho clause could not possibly have got away so cheaply. The clause thus stipulates that Barca must pay almost £60 Million by 2021 in addition to a possible transfer fee when they go on a rampage in Liverpool.

However, FC Barcelona are still very interested in the 30-year-old Dutchman. The most likely scenario, according to reports is that Barca will wait until January 1, when the Catalan big club can start negotiations on a pre-contract with Wijnaldum.

If these negotiations was successful, the Dutchman can switch to Barca free and clear when his contract with Liverpool expires this summer. Wijnaldum has played in Liverpool since 2016, when he was bought from Newcastle. He has so far played 201 games for "The Reds".
